The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (DoT) proposed to upgrade the D1506 Road within the eThekwini Municipality. The starting point co-ordinate of the section that was upgraded is 29°42'33.16"S; 30°44'45.07"E, and then travels in a northerly direction, ending at the co-ordinate 29°40'22.50"S; 30°43'23.20"E. The proposed upgrade was about 5.34 km long and it included the upgrading of the road surface from gravel to a concrete surface.

KEY FEATURES

  • Emerging main contractor invested in the purchase of heavy plant and made effective use of his existing plant.
  • Workers from the community received financial reward and practical training in a number of sustainable activities
  • Maximisation of labour intensive activities, using local labour and used of the geo-cell system to construct a very cost-effective, all-weather road on exceptionally steep grades.
  • The Client body, the Department of Transport, used the experience as a basis for its future similar labour intensive road construction projects in the area.
  • Created enormous tourist potential as a safe access to a wide, clean stretch of the Mgeni River as it flows across the basement granites.
