The Rehabilitation of Main Road 395 (km 0+000 – km 10+000)
Naidu Consulting (Pty) Ltd was appointed by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (KZN DOT) to oversee the rehabilitation of Main Road 395, located between Southbroom and Port Shepstone. The road, serving as an alternative route to National Route 2 and providing access to local communities and beaches, has faced complaints from the community and local businesses regarding its deteriorating riding surface.
The work involves milling 300mm of the existing surface and importing 200mm of G5 material to construct a C4 stabilized subbase. Following this, a 100mm asphalt base layer and a 50mm wearing course will be paved between Km 0+000 and Km 20+000.
The subbase layer between Km 20+000 and Km 25+000 was found to be in a sound condition after evaluation of the non-intrusive and intrusive investigations requiring only a mill and replace action to be undertaken.
