Tshwane Stormwater Drainage Cleaning Programme
The Stormwater Drains Cleaning programme is one of Santam’s preventative programmes for reducing insurance claims from its clients caused by road flooding. Santam, being the funder of this programme, has partnered with the City of Tshwane and appointed Naidu Consulting as the implementing agent.
The works comprise of providing 10 students, who were selected from the Tshwane Learning Management Academy, to be employed by Naidu Consulting to participate in stormwater drain cleaning activities, carried out by the City of Tshwane Stormwater Maintenance teams.

Key features:
- Improved drainage to 1411 sites reducing risk of flooding, pollution and financial losses.
- Local Youth were employed for 14 months, empowered by gaining technical skills, work experience and formal Health and Safety training provided by Naidu Consulting.
- Reduced flooding and ponding which prevents unwanted habitats for pests and vegetation.
- Skills transfer – The youth was integrated with the City of Tshwane’s maintenance team, to focus on maintaining drainage infrastructure in three of the most dense regions of the City
- The programme demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in solving urban infrastructure challenges.
