Emergency flood damage repairs to the Mhlali River Bridge. Major works included vertically and horizontally jacking the displaced deck back into its original position, full replacement of all bearings, reconstructing the closure walls and retrofitting work to improve the bridge's resilience to future extreme weather events.

  • Technical excellence – highly technical nature of jacking works

  • Environmental – clearing and reinstating the flood damaged area, removal of alien vegetation, protection of protected plant species along the riverbed, responsible disposal of waste, regular visits by the DFFE
  • Social – lots of local labour trained and have developed basic construction skills, CPG labour targets significantly exceeded
  • Health and safety – lots of training due to the high risk work of jacking the deck
