The construction of the Kokstad N2 Interchange and Traffic Control Centre Project, located on National Route 2 Section 21, is a transformative initiative by SANRAL. This project aims to enhance road safety, improve traffic flow, and bolster connectivity for surrounding communities. It includes new interchanges, road widening, and the construction of a state-of-the-art Traffic Control Centre (TCC). The project includes the construction of a new 3 span bridge over the National Road 2 (N2) and its approach fill embankments, as well as the widening of the existing Koppieskraal River Bridge(B1821) on the N2, six new box culverts, a new underpass and the extension of one existing culverts. The project further includes for the construction of a new Traffic Control Centre (TCC) as well as interchange lighting. The project also involves the realignment of the R56 towards Kokstad and the construction of a parallel service road to the R56. This project goes beyond infrastructure, delivering community upliftment, economic empowerment, and a safer, more efficient road network for generations to come.

Key features:

  • Targeted Enterprises – The project supports over 70 targeted enterprises, ranging from CIDB Grades 1 to 5, ensuring small and emerging contractors play a significant role. These enterprises are projected to benefit from a targeted spend exceeding R150 million, fostering sustainable growth in Kokstad and surrounding areas.
  • Contract Skills Development Goals (CSDG) – Of the 0.25% target for CSDG, nearly 90% has been accomplished as the project nears completion. These efforts significantly contribute to the development of TVET/FET students, university students, and candidates pursuing professional registration.
  • Construction Ingenuity – The project incorporates innovative materials and engineering solutions to ensure long-lasting, high-quality infrastructure:
    • Bitumen Treated Base (BTB): A resilient, flexible base layer offering excellent load distribution and water resistance.
    • Bitumen Rubber Gap-Graded Asphalt (BRAGG): A premium wearing course providing superior flexibility, crack resistance, and noise reduction.
  • Exceeding Key Targets – The project has successfully reached and exceeded targets for military veterans and differently abled individuals, further promoting inclusivity and economic participation for underrepresented groups.
  • Planned Job Creation – As the project approaches completion, 50 additional jobs are expected. These efforts align with SANRAL’s Community Participation Goals (CPG), Community Development, and Contract Skills Development Goals (CSDG) targets.Awards
